Physiotherapy for back pain and sciatica
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people come to the clinic. Most cases get much better with a proper assessment, the right treatment and a simple exercise plan.
When to come in
- Low back pain that has lasted more than a few days
- Pain that spreads into the buttock or down the leg (sciatica)
- Stiffness in the morning or after sitting for a long time
- Back pain that keeps coming back
- A disc bulge or herniation your doctor has found
How we treat it
Assessment
We ask how the pain started and what makes it better or worse, then check your movement, strength and the nerves in your leg.
Hands-on treatment
Mobilisation and soft tissue techniques to ease the pain and help you move more freely.
Exercise
A few simple exercises for home that change as you improve. This is what keeps the pain from coming back.
Everyday advice
How to sit, lift and stay active without overloading your back.
How many sessions you will need
It depends on the problem and how long you have had it. After the first session we will tell you what to expect and how often to come. Most people feel a difference within the first few weeks.
See a doctor straight away if you have
- Weakness or numbness in the leg that is getting worse
- Numbness around the genitals or back passage
- Trouble controlling your bladder or bowels
- Pain after a serious fall or accident
- Pain with fever or weight loss you cannot explain
Common questions
Do I need an MRI before I come?
Usually not. Most back pain does not need a scan. If you already have an MRI or X-ray, bring it with you.
Should I rest or keep moving?
A little rest in the first days can help, but too much rest slows recovery. Gentle movement and walking are usually better.
