Physiotherapy for knee pain
Whether it is a football injury or wear and tear, knee pain changes the way you walk and move. Targeted exercise usually makes the biggest difference.
When to come in
- Knee pain on stairs, when sitting or when running
- A ligament or meniscus injury
- Knee arthritis (osteoarthritis)
- Pain at the front of the knee, around the kneecap
- Rehab after knee surgery
How we treat it
Assessment
We check your knee, and also your hip and ankle, because they often play a part in knee pain.
Strengthening
Exercises for the thigh and hip muscles that protect the knee.
Hands-on treatment
Techniques to reduce pain and help the joint move better.
A gradual return
A plan to get you back to walking, running or your sport without the pain returning.
How many sessions you will need
Muscles take a few weeks to get stronger, so improvement comes step by step. After your first session we give you a realistic plan.
See a doctor straight away if you have
- Not being able to put weight on the leg after an injury
- A knee that swelled up a lot within a few hours
- A knee that locks and will not straighten
- A red, hot, swollen knee with a fever
Common questions
Is physiotherapy worth it with knee arthritis?
Yes. Strengthening exercise is one of the most effective treatments for knee arthritis and reduces day-to-day pain.
Should I use ice or heat?
After a recent injury, ice usually helps with swelling. For long-standing pain and stiffness, many people feel better with heat.
Is it covered by GeSY?
