Physiotherapy for shoulder pain

Your shoulder moves more than any other joint, which is why it hurts so easily. With the right diagnosis and exercises, most people get back to everything they did before.

When to come in

  • Pain when you lift your arm or reach up high
  • Pain at night when you lie on that side
  • A shoulder that has stiffened and will not move like it used to (frozen shoulder)
  • Tendon pain or a rotator cuff problem
  • Weakness after an injury or a dislocation

How we treat it

Assessment

We look at how your shoulder moves, how strong the muscles are and which movements hurt, to find where the problem is coming from.

Hands-on treatment

Techniques to ease pain and improve how far you can move.

Strengthening

Step-by-step exercises for the shoulder and shoulder blade muscles, the key to most shoulder problems.

Back to your activities

We help you get back to work, the gym or your sport safely.

How many sessions you will need

Shoulder problems usually take a bit longer, because tendons get stronger slowly. A frozen shoulder can last months. We explain what to expect from the start.

See a doctor straight away if you have

  • A shoulder that looks out of shape after a fall
  • Not being able to lift your arm at all after an injury
  • Left shoulder pain with chest pain or shortness of breath
  • A red, hot shoulder with a fever

Common questions

What is a frozen shoulder?

It is a condition where the shoulder becomes painful and slowly stiffens. It gets better over time, and physiotherapy helps reduce the pain and bring back movement.

Do I have to stop going to the gym?

Not always. We usually change the exercises that hurt and keep the ones you can do comfortably.

Is it covered by GeSY?

GeSY covers physiotherapy for specific diagnoses, with a referral from your personal doctor or a specialist. The number of sessions depends on the diagnosis and the co-payment is €10 per visit. You can also book privately.
